Vasectomy

For many years the onus of contraception has been placed upon the ladies of our life, however for couples whom have decided enough is enough vasectomy is a far more reasonable easier and less invasive option and is accompanied with less associated problems, for example a high proportion of women whom have tubal ligation go on to have a hysterectomy in 5-10 years.

Vasectomy should be regarded as streilisation and not undertaken with the view to subsequent reversal (although vasectomy reversal is possible). The ideal situation is for a couple whom have decided they have completed their family and that temporary contraceptive methods are no longer appropriate.

The Procedure

This involves the division of the vas deferens which is the tube which takes immature sperm from the testicle to the prostate, to interrupt the accumulation of more sperm in the prostate.

A small piece is removed and sent for confirmation and the two cut ends are tied to prevent recannulisation.

The small incision is closed with adsorbable stitches.

You will be given a hypnotic anaesthetic at the beginning of the procedure and most people sleep right through the procedure, for which we allow one hour.

It is necessary to have someone to take you home after procedure.

Recovery

This varies with the individual however most people take between two to five days, return to work will also be influenced by the occupation of the individual.

Cost

This is a medicare rebateable procedure and as such becomes elegible for private health insurance rebates (you need to check with your insurer).

Our costs to you will be $660 plus medical evaluation and investigation.
